چکیده

Knowledge of the thermal conductivity of boron carbide is necessary o evaluate its potential for high temperature thermoelectric energy conversion applications. We have measured the thermal diffusivity of hot -pressed boron carbide B1_xCx samples as a function of composition (0.1 < x < 0.2), temperature (300 K to 1700 K) and temperature cycling. These data in concert with density and specific heat data yield the thermal conductivities of these materials. We discuss these results in terms of a structural model that has been previously advanced by two of us (D.E. and C.W.) to explain the electrical transport data. Some novel mechanisms for thermal conduction are briefly discussed.

Silver Nanoparticle-Deposited Boron Nitride Nanosheets as Fillers for Polymeric Composites with High Thermal Conductivity

Polymer composites with high thermal conductivity have recently attracted much attention, along with the rapid development of the electronic devices toward higher speed and performance. However, a common method to enhance polymer thermal conductivity through an addition of high thermally conductive fillers usually cannot provide an expected value, especially for composites requiring electrical ...

Superior thermal conductivity in suspended bilayer hexagonal boron nitride

We reported the basal-plane thermal conductivity in exfoliated bilayer hexagonal boron nitride h-BN that was measured using suspended prepatterned microstructures. The h-BN sample suitable for thermal measurements was fabricated by dry-transfer method, whose sample quality, due to less polymer residues on surfaces, is believed to be superior to that of PMMA-mediated samples. The measured room t...

Relationship between Molten Oxide Structure and Thermal Conductivity in the CaO–SiO2–B2O3 System

Using a transient hot-wire method, the thermal conductivity of the CaO–SiO2–B2O3 mold flux system was measured. The effects of temperature, BO1.5 concentration and basicity on the thermal conductivity were considered, along with structural investigation by Raman spectroscopy. It was found that the addition of boron oxide caused both a decrement and increment of thermal conductivity, depending o...

First-principles determination of ultrahigh thermal conductivity of boron arsenide: a competitor for diamond?

We have calculated the thermal conductivities (κ) of cubic III-V boron compounds using a predictive first principles approach. Boron arsenide is found to have a remarkable room temperature κ over 2000 W m(-1) K(-1); this is comparable to those in diamond and graphite, which are the highest bulk values known. We trace this behavior in boron arsenide to an interplay of certain basic vibrational p...

Breakdown of Fourier's law in nanotube thermal conductors.

We present experimental evidence that the room temperature thermal conductivity (kappa) of individual multiwalled carbon and boron-nitride nanotubes does not obey Fourier's empirical law of thermal conduction. Because of isotopic disorder, kappa's of carbon nanotubes and boron-nitride nanotubes show different length dependence behavior. Moreover, for these systems we find that Fourier's law is ...
